The US Dept. of Justice recently announced charges against two lawyers and others for defrauding homeowners.
This case is a cautionary tale for at risk homeowners. Sometimes if it seems too good to be true, it very well may be.
It is alleged in the indictment that the law firms would tell homeowners to file bankruptcy and not disclose that it had helped filling out the forms.
Lawyers and bankruptcy petition preparers should never tell you to hide that you had help filing for bankruptcy. If this happens to you, you may want to contact the United States Trustee, Attorney General and Consumer Protection Bureau.
